Grey Alien Games factoid of the day: I've made 8 games that have grossed well over $100K (average $345K) and was a team member/consultant on others that did pretty well. Somehow I'm not rich though, which is annoying. I think other parties scooped up most of the cash.

Even pocketing 70% of the money yourself 150k gross isn't nearly as good as people seem to think. Lose a third to Steam, another 5-10% to returns/chargebacks, then you have costs incurred, then you get taxed on what's left.

Yep. $150K gross can easily represent a loss or a financial disaster depending on a studios costs. A lot of people don't get this.

that's why Steamspy was bad. After reading those stats, people thought all indies were rich while it's maybe the 0,001%
