it always amuses me when people say that sales data is useful as market research. To see if a genre is popular it's enough to check the Steam topseller ratings.

Besides it's like saying that if a fantasy RPG made money, then if I make one I'll automagically make the same amount. Lol. I made several fantasy RPGs, even using same artist and combat system, and some sold x5 or even x10 more than others!

games are like book, movies, music. Artwork, not an algorithm. You can't reproduce a game success with a magic formula. Honestly it would be pretty sad if that was possible...

well like Fifa series or Football Manager :P but those are exception and to be honest I don't know how people can keep buying the same game with small differences every year!
