in my opinion you should FIRST make a good game, and then it's worth spending money on marketing. But without a good game you can just throw money in the toilet and the effect will be the same

I'm not sure what to think of the visual novel that becomes popular due to memes. It makes me wonder if there's any "deep stories" in a meme but then I realize that's a one road trip to disappointment if I know enough of what I read so far.

helps that if you're already famous before making your game, like Toby Fox.

You say you think people find out from word of mouth. Have you ever done a survey or poll of your customers?
-
no but I know that several people found my games through friends' recommendations and also I know of fans that go around and spread the word in forums/communities

Curious to know which has been your most successful game so far? I've played loads of them, and have most but never considered which one other people might have liked best.

it was Loren obviously :)

I know a game making money is important for future games to be produced in indie gaming world, but I will always buy a great story game over anything else. Game play comes next and it is important, but if you can't get my mind into the game, you aren't getting my cash.
