That may be a luxury available to a few who have crafted lives and careers that let them speak freely w/o much risk the mob can harm them. On the other hand, simply refusing to bow to the mob may often be enough.

So many of these cases seem to involve cowardly acquiescence by people who have spent their careers cultivating a servile mindset. If such people resisted (refusing to resign, for instance), I wonder how many the mob could actually take down.

Good thought. Along with individuals, the people that really need to stop caring are those in corporations who buckle and decide to cancel people, projects, etc... when the pressure comes. They're the ones who need quiet fortitude and thick skin to make a real difference.
