The Scientist's Warning is a film about a researcher who started a movement of scientists to turn knowledge into action- a story of scientists all over the world awakening to the need to become advocates for the fate of the planet & humanity. youtu.be/byXGCPo-80w via

CLIMATE EMERGENCY: Notice how the CO2 emissions dropped during the lock-down of the Covid pandemic, but soon after on their way to new record highs? It is hard to have hope when you see this trend, but we must not give up on this existential threat.

NATURE NOTE: This is an adult male Gouldian Finch, one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Found in northern Australia, the numbers for this species have been declining over the long run. We must protect biodiversity in all forms.

THE BIG MELT: New Study Finds ‘Surprising’ Warming Spike Atop the Greenland Ice Sheet One of the planet’s refrigerators is defrosting, leading to melting events that could raise sea levels 20 inches. In my view, it is time for serious climate action.

THINK SYSTEMATICALLY and check out this 2 minute video by my coauthor, Dr. William Rees. He describes how climate change is not a stand alone problem, but is a symptom of ecological overshoot.

Looking at the world with an 'ecology' lens gives different conclusions (and prescriptions) than a technology or money lens. This Wed on TGS we'll hear from ecologist William Rees on why 'ecological overshoot' is THE fundamental issue facing human/planetary systems. A 2 min clip:

CLIMATE EMERGENCY: Are you too noticing news of a new climate-linked disaster nearly every day? We may be toast unless there are big rapid changes in how humanity operates. U-turn anyone?

NATURE NOTE: The colors are amazing on this male which has a "carapace in reddish orange color with two iridescent blue stripes". Let's protect jumping spiders and all biodiversity.

Wow, this is shocking! The number of diverse wild mammals changed quickly & dramatically with the arrival of humans. Since then, wild land mammal biomass has declined by ~85%. Humans & livestock are now the dominant mammals, a major factor in the biodiversity and climate crisis.

Wow! 2 climate researchers got kicked out of the world's biggest Earth-science conference for protesting, and one says they are silencing scientists. They were told they'd be arrested if they returned. One of them was fired from her job by the government.

There’s one big subject our leaders won’t touch. Just two actions needed to prevent catastrophic climate breakdown: leave fossil fuels in the ground and stop farming animals. Thanks to the power of the two industries, both are officially unmentionable.

NATURE NOTE: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend". This is a good example of the perfection of nature.

When some plants are faced with insect infestations, they send out distress signals attracting birds. Birds like this Parus major read those chemical cues to locate infested plants, giving truth to an old proverb “The enemy of my enemy is my friend”

The big-headed turtle is eaten in Asia and is frequently a market item. This species is rapidly disappearing in the wild and is also threatened by its use in pet trade. Can we stop the expoitation of this species, respect all creatures, and curb human surpremacy.

The devil's flower mantis remains motionless to seduce the insect prey into its striking zone. The mandibles are then "wielded as formidable weapons" to decapitate and devour the prey. We must preserve biodiversity in all forms.

Those of us that have put on diving gear and coasted past a healthy coral reef knows that few observations in nature are as breathtaking. More than half of the world's coral reef cover has already been lost. Quickly mitigating climate change may help save some of them.

A GOOD NEWS STORY: The International Whaling Commission agreed to a global moratorium which mostly made commercial whaling illegal. This came into action in 1987, and we see a dramatic drop-off in whale catch in the decades since then. We must save whales and all biodiversity.

HOW MANY DESCRIBED SPECIES? The IUCN listed 2.13 million species on the planet. In the chart we see the range of taxonomic groups – 1.05 million insects; over 11,000 birds; over 11,000 reptiles; and over 6,000 mammals. There are many more species that have not been described.

This is a big win for shark conservation. Since 1970, the global abundance of these predators has declined more than 70 percent. We must protect sharks and all forms of biodiversity.

VICTORY🎉: @POTUS signed the End Wildlife Trafficking Act & the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act into law! Imperiled wild animals—like 🦈—are more valuable than the sum of their body parts & we must protect them. TY to all who made these major victories for animals possible! 🙌

I have fantastic news on Europe's rewilding. Hunting and habitat loss drove many large mammals in Europe close to extinction. New data shows that many of the continent’s mammal populations are flourishing again.

Our data show that hunting, livestock, and habitat loss of the biggest threats to large land mammals around the world. We must protect all biodiversity including the terrestrial megafauna.

Where's the beef? It is where tropical forests used to be. 41% of tropical deforestation is driven by pasture expansion for beef (Our World in Data). Please eat more legumes for protein and "give peas a chance".

BREAKING NEWS: 190 countries agree to protect 30% of the planet at #COP15 #biodiversity summit. If this commitment is kept, it will be a huge win for nature, but keep in mind the lack of action with the historic 2015 Paris agreement on climate change.

Great News: The Global #Biodiversity Framework has been adopted! By committing to protect 30% of our planet, the world is finally taking a huge step towards reconciling with nature. This is a leap for humanity and it's time #ForNature: on.unesco.org/2XQ2DXD #COP15
