We need to stop training rock stars. This is one of several reasons why I no longer pursue IT certification.

Yes, totally agree with you on the ideas around certs. Certifications are a pretty interesting case-study in behavior manipulation.

I also find it interesting/sad seeing all the status conferred on certs and badges (especially around Cisco-Live). Value learning..
