I sometimes see it implied that Congress’s poor understanding of Internet platforms’ data collection practices means it shouldn’t regulate them. I think that gets it backwards.

I argue here that Congress’s confusion about Google and privacy is really an argument *for* regulation.https://slate.com/technology/2018/12/google-congress-hearing-sundar-pichai-confusion-regulation.html …

Specifically, we need federal privacy regulation that compels tech companies to make their policies *less* confusing. You shouldn’t have to be an expert to know whether Google is tracking you around the room on your iPhone, as the befuddled Rep. Poe demanded to know.pic.twitter.com/2iBiG8on3A

At today’s hearing, the biggest theme was GOP grandstanding about Google’s alleged liberal bias. That understandable but overblown concern is going nowhere under Dem committee leadership, as @jguynn pointed out.

The more interesting takeaway from today’s hearing, though, was the bipartisan frustration at not being able to understand how Google’s digital surveillance system works. One GOP rep framed better privacy protections in terms of patriotism. And that’s a very encouraging sign.pic.twitter.com/66NewihXPi

If industry experts can't pick this all apart, then the level needed is too high. Law makers can't become industry experts every time they look into something.pic.twitter.com/K1KquN97u2

I thought this was a particularly insightful take on the regulation question:https://twitter.com/matthewstoller/status/1072491432487907330 …

          15. Also, regulating Google is a way of entrenching its monopoly. That's what Google wants, a regulated monopoly protected by state power. The key is to break-up Google and then regulate the markets in which its component parts operate.

Wrong standard. You can't just regulate things that Republicans don't understand or we will have to start regulating things like books, and empathy.
