I've been wondering why publishers don't do just-in-time publishing of their entire back catalog, at a premium. The tech exists for one-off printing, surely, if people are willing to pay the costs.

Because people don't like the idea of their nostalgia being trampled upon (even when it's not, and their nostalgia isn't as great as they remember), and they've been told to fear "cancel culture" and "censorship" and not recognizing that it's really just free enterprise.

If the Dr. Seuss publisher hadn’t said anything, no one would have noticed. Those books aren’t as popular as some of the other titles. And, honestly, half the people outraged wouldn’t have noticed had they pulled a more popular title.

Stephen King himself chose to no longer have Rage published. He understood a book about a school shooting and taking students hostage isn't needed in this current climate. It's not canceling, its empathy and awareness.
