its really easy to build a massive business by: 1. finding an expensive piece of hardware customers need 2. giving it to them for free 3. charging them software subscriptions with lock-in. toast, dandy, etc. are all just running this model with hundreds of these left to build

Does the freebie need to be hardware? Seems like it could be another piece of mission-critical software with good speed-to-value, then charge higher prices for no-brained add-ons. (And then layer on a loan product and collect interest.)
