99% of tech jobs that market themselves as explicitly "ethical" are just expensive, useless, science fair projects. you could take a job at facebook, donate $5k a year, and make more of an impact than slogging five years on a drone that delivers aspirin across the sahara

I agree, but this is compatible with the observation that a lot of ostensibly altruistic projects are not well thought through. I think the upshot is (very roughly) something like Effectively filling a legitimate need > earning to give > keeps your hands clean with useless stuff
