toxic trait: I do not believe "hiking shoes" are necessary, and am unconvinced by "running shoes"

There is some value in specific treads. Trail running shoes are the best.

I’m just walking uphill and then downhill, if I can’t do that in good sneakers what’s the point of sneakers
-
rolling ankles r supporter better in boots vs sneakers also sneakers aren’t as waterproof so less gud on rainy / mud days …. I am oddly pro boots here

ideally I wear sneakers for most of most dry-weather hikes, but if there's going to be lengthy slippery or scree sections I'm gonna boot up for the ankle support

in some weather (rain/snow) high ankle boots is weather protection. traction on treads is important. Pack weights used to be much higher, so support for the novel loads (to your ankles) was important. That’s why the answer currently is trail running shoes. Sneakers w tread.
