Sometimes I wonder if science fiction movies/books have more impact over defining our vision for the future than the tech industry itself. Pieces of sci-fi stories often become the cultural stock image of progression that we strive to realize, whether consciously or not.

yeah, I've heard a lot of horror stories about this as well. it often sounds like a disconnect between the storyteller stubbornly clinging to their original vision (perhaps rightfully so) while the startup struggles to adapt the concept to work in a non-imaginary world.
