LDL cholesterol is a key cause of cardiovascular disease (and thus mortality in general). It seems there are no downsides to super low LDL (https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/ldl-cholesterol-how-low-can-you-safely-go-2020012018638 …) which raises the Q... why do we even produce it?

Maybe very low dose? In any case this is why I like the gene therapy approach, it sidesteps this issue. But also, you are building up lipids in your arteries as we speak (even babies have fatty streaks in their arteries) so there may be a benefit to lifelong statins!
