It’s always surprising to me how terrible management is at large, old-economy companies.

Some of the smartest people I knew in school rushed to these companies on the premise that the talent bar was so low even modest outperformance would put them into leadership early. And all but one have since sulked away, finding that these cultures completely constrict anything

this is one advantage that big tech has against rust-belt industry and paper-belt finance + media cos: their startup competitors have access to meaningful funding sources, so the big tech cos feel market pressures to listen to employees and treat them well.
