what's bad about it?
prioritizing your life based on what things have the highest first order, easily measurable, effect as a pure utility calculation leads to all kind of wacky outcomes that limit what people that otherwise could change the world do

yeah agree — that's a dangerous hammer to wield but I think EA deserves a bit more charity
I'm sure some ppl are guilty of what you've described, but I believe EAs are well aware of these problems + try to account for them. I don't think they claim to have found 'the answer'!Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Not sure if thats the case, many EAs are now working on more longtermist efforts like AI Safety or Biorisks, where the impact is clearly not easily measurable.. whats your perception of those "wacky outcomes" (too much ea's doing academia and policy instead of startups?)
