The term cautiously optimistic is meaningless and it should be stricken from business/professional jargon. Its primary function is to make the speaker/writer sound intelligent and avoid blame, criticism, and/or responsibility in the face of outcomes.

look as far as I can tell all you need to do to get ******** to preempt your round these days is to say you’re cautiously optimistic about your numbers this quarter so the phrase has utility
