Looking back on it, it’s pretty horrifying how little I learned from the ages of 3-17 that wasn’t just a function of reading often or writing. So many wasted hours that weren’t one of those two activities, home schoolers might be onto something.

I'm intrigued by homeschooling, but for the opposite reason. School is a lot of reading and studying set material. When I look back, I learned the most by actively doing things that intrigued me: making model rockets, playing fantasy baseball, exploring USENET/IRC, ...

I agree with your take fwiw, just wasn’t / am still not a “maker”. Books and writing have always been the atomic unit of things I’m working on or through
