the idea that you can "teach critical thinking" is complete hogwash. you can improve the cognitive skills of people who are already good at thinking. that's it

What is "actually gaining anything new"? Is it "Finding a new way to explore the territory?" or "Adding an ontological object that wasn't there previously?" One of the reasons I'm interested in diplomacy is that good people are often surprised at how well their friends can lie
Agree with you on diplomacy being a very interesting training ground and testing field for a bunch of things down this vein. My argument is you are at best shifting the basis set of mental models, not introducing the ability to be better at applying them

Would you agree that if diplomacy makes people better at actually noticing deception outside of the context of diplomacy, that this counts as causing people to be better at applying their mental models?

diplomacy causes a shift from a set of social models that assume cooperation to a set of mental models that assume betrayal because it’s a zero sum game. I suspect telling a person this would have roughly the same effect
