the idea that you can "teach critical thinking" is complete hogwash. you can improve the cognitive skills of people who are already good at thinking. that's it

idk I've played enough diplomacy to know you can at least teach people cynical thinking, which seems like a close cousin
I think in this example you’re only better learning the territory, not actually gaining anything new

What is "actually gaining anything new"? Is it "Finding a new way to explore the territory?" or "Adding an ontological object that wasn't there previously?" One of the reasons I'm interested in diplomacy is that good people are often surprised at how well their friends can lie

Which strikes me as genuinely overton window shifting. When it comes to real training, I like to hunt for surprise - when people are surprised by basic human nature, the extent of their own capacities, etc.
