the ability for a field to make progress seems directly inversely correlated with the number of folks completing graduate work in it.
Small networks move progress, industrialized science raises h-indexes. (H/t @ArtirKel)

I think there’s an apt analogy to communities. In small networks, you can know all the researchers investigating a problem, there’s less room to get away with bullshit. When the community gets scaled up drastically, different norms apply
