I thought there thing was only national defense related companies, do they reach out to others to fund deep tech investments?
they seem to have an increasingly broad mandate and are really good folks, big fan

As with DARPA, they probably end up staffed with people who want to fund cool stuff, formally they may have to justify it in some defense grounds, but deep down it may not be why they fund it
