Most innovations seem to cluster in time: evolution (Darwin/Wallace), calculus (Leibniz/Newton), molecular theory (Avogadro/Ampere), etc. This seems to suggest that even exceptional people do not counterfactually matter; history has its own force. Ideas are "in the air".
wonder how many of these dual discoveries were because of individual, unknowable, infrastructure level discoveries that preceded them.
