Can someone explain the whole "cheering on the decline of the university" thing to me? I don't get it. A world where the only functioning institutions are tech companies & hedge funds is, in fact, a dystopian one.

This is one of the most terrifying things about the common discourse rn. Not everyone should be a stripe l3, universities have value and we shouldn't celebrate their burning. But we should probably fix how broken theyve become rn

Yeah this is my position exactly. Three buckets for institutions: 1. Works great —> do nothing 2. Lots of problems but basically ok —> reform 3. Irreparably bad —> abolish & replace People seem to be throwing everything that’s not a tech company into #3.

also tranche three people dramatically underestimate how hard founding a new institution is. There are functionally no reasonable (non state system) colleges founded after the war. I went to one, it was terrifying. It’d not like burning down Harvard means we get to reallocate it
