Was just chatting with @delk about how I joined @stripe—I was (politely) rejected after interviewing. We had a process where you could "champion" someone & overrule the hiring committee. @ricburton championed me at Stripe, a few weeks into a 30-day trial I got my full time offer.

I would guess because failure rates in startups are way higher than in employees who still pass basic competency tests. Also the range of “successful” vs “bad” outcomes in startups vs employees is plotted over a v different range. And you can train employees.
