I think this is spot on. Sit in a random cafe in SOMA and you're likely to overhear conversations that touch on deal terms, company dynamics, etc. Even absent any real data, a lot can be gleaned from the affect of people talking.https://twitter.com/benedictevans/status/1262814660018999298 …

Wondering if a lot of the benefit of proximity is intangible - it’s about the stuff you overhear and your peripheral vision. So, it doesn’t show up in what ‘I did today’, and you seem to be productive, but it does show up in ‘what I learnt this month, or this year’

Continued focus is a powerful lever arm. When you're in a place that is so deeply fucked as cambridge/SF as to be so singular in culture, you gain a lot by just not being able to stop thinking about a thing because its everywhere

Yeah, there's also something in having "the best" in your backyard. It's why I'm somewhat skeptical that Austin, Atlanta, Nashville, etc. are really going to make a run as tech centers. It's one thing to have a lot of institutions, another to have a lot of great ones.

Seems relatively obvious that small groups of talented folks can go and build large one off venture outcomes in weird geos once they already have the capital/networks of hubs. I am incredibly skeptical of anything organic popping out at scale in any of these places

For sure, though I wish there was better tech reporting out of places like Stockholm and Sydney – both are generating repeatable success, if unevenly, without clear sources of capital. Curious what the rate limiters are in each locale.
