it’s interesting how any field that has sufficiently progressed into phase 3 can convince itself that any marginal gains are actually the trunks of stepwise knowledge formation

What young people (and sometimes seasoned practitioners) can benefit from is reading histories of fields during “alchemy” phases. I think that would help them calibrate and figure out how to do impactful things, since otherwise they self-sort into polished phases, or your (3)
