progress isn't linear like a series of github commits, but rather it looks like a bunch of vague wins in different areas that start appearing near each other and reinforce each other

the model I always liked was progress is mapping a space of metaphors that eventually reduce in complexity. In some spaces, we’re stuck with more complex metaphors for longer, but improvements can jump across the map

this reminds me of the idea that human cognition/language comes from chunking increasingly complicated concepts into simpler ones, whose details can then be forgotten i like the idea of improvements jumping across the map
