I think the big divider here is the leader claiming to have singular access to divine truth. Religions that either have founders that pass on lines ofcontinuing revelation (JC->Peter->Popes) or have singular very-in-the-past revelation (the Quran was revealed once) less culty.pic.twitter.com/RNUskT1ug8

tax treatment seems like a pretty good lagging indicator of just historical age since point of revelation. A nice example here is Quakerism, which is relatively modern and practices similar continuing revelation. Doesn't get branded a cult because it's decentralized.
