A friend pointed out that although computers can now understand human language, it is difficult to think of similarly mind-blowing applications. This is because NLP should be paired with awareness of context, such as images. VQA is exciting because it serves as a precedent.

Right? Summaries are about reading language and generating language. Most applications of NLP are also language all the way through the stack. The exciting ones, in my mind, are the mixed stacks.
