The benefits the tech industry gets at CS conferences in terms of hiring, branding, representation in the program, compared to what it contributes by sponsoring them, are completely out of proportion. The figures I saw for venues like
@ACM_CSCW or@TheWebConf are indeed obscene. -
Because of this, and for a negligible cost, they have a disproportionate impact on the directions the corresponding research communities pursue compared to the priorities of governmental bodies, NGOs and nonprofits.
