I was trying to explain to my 7 yo how powerful it is to be able to read, because you can now learn anything from books instead of waiting for teachers to teach you. When I described a shelf of books as an army of robot teachers, he started to get it.
one thing I really adored that my parents did when I was a child (obv. not always feasible) was to strictly limit spending on all things (toys, clothes, etc.) but never limit the budget for books.

Similar for me: Every paycheck I would get books, if I had finished the ones we bought before. 2-4 books a month, what a delight!

My parents did the same! Strict budget for most things, never on books. I had the entire goosebumps series.
