Delighted to see such productive peacekeeping partnerships between the UK contingent and colleagues on the ground in Gao. One to watch for the 🇬🇧 network: 🇧🇩, 🇯🇴, 🇨🇳, 🇩🇪, 🇸🇪

Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining all the nations based in Gao, as SRSG El-Ghassim Wane visited us. Troops from Bangladesh, Jordan, China, Germany and Sweden, working together for 🇲🇱 on behalf of the UN.

The Long Range Recce Group isn’t here to understand conventional ‘enemy positions’ or avenues of approach. It’s here to understand human security threats and needs. Similar, but not the same. That why training like Rosie’s is part of UK training for 🇺🇳operations

The Long Range Reconnaissance Group. What’s it all about? Putting blue berets in hard to reach places, and working alongside our UN brothers and sisters, to protect civilians wherever we can. 🇬🇧🇺🇳

Finally, imagine being a nomad: living in a tent and moving with your herds when this hit. Normal life for the people we met. In fact, with rain comes grass, and so food for their cattle. The rain is good for and the . so you won’t get any complaints from us. 10/10

This is barely the start of the wet season. So there is more to come. Thankfully the vehicles are up to the task and we can cross wet and dry terrain. But you can already see the green shoots appearing in the desert. 9/10

After it’s all done? It’s great to feel cool. And you don’t stay wet for long. You can tell who was mid-way through their admin and who wasn’t. Thankfully no sleeping bags got wet. 😅 8/10

Remember at this point that sentry positions and radios are still manned. Out here you are always alert, day and night. Even if everything around you turns to dust. 7/10

So you’ve got storm force winds, and horizontal rain. Thankfully our people and tents are made of strong stuff. Although sometimes the tents and people have to work together against Mother Nature. “Not now, Jonny!” 🤣 6/10

Next... remember the storm that caused the haboob? It’s not far behind. Fortunately a dump of cool rain, even in a storm-force gale, is good for morale. Before the storm hit the temperature was 48°c. 5/10

If you are too slow? Well, you’ll need to grab your things. Again, the think of the watchkeeper who had to sit through the storm manning the net so that our guard wasn’t down. 4/10

As soon as you see it you need to get ready. Shelters down, kit packed - but of course sentries need to stay up. If you were mid-way through your admin, it might approach faster than you can react... as we’ll see. 3/10
