I ended up splitting the batch, with 5L getting a small lactose addition in the keg. The extra sweetness really works with the dry, charcoal finish but leaves it a bit too drinkable for the strength!

With the cooler evening, it's time to sample the barley wine I brewed almost exactly a year ago (16/09/18). Considerably darker with age but packed with toffee, brandy, fudge, raisin and coconut flavours. Should've made more.
