“Are my elephants going for a walk?” were the words that escaped his shrivelled, quivering lips as he breathed his last. Attaur Rahman Chacha’s frail structure and his small voice calling out to Suzy will no longer be heard at Elephant Care & Conservation Centre.. (Read thread)pic.twitter.com/5XFzk0rpqg

...as his soul transcends to a special place from where he will watch over his elephants just the way he looked after them his entire life. A reformed erstwhile poacher, Chacha came to #ECCC in 2015 when #WildlifeSOS rescued the Nut Herd from the circus.pic.twitter.com/uDTNKSM70o

Earlier, he spent his life capturing elephants from forests, and then took care of them in the circus. At each point, he would look back at his life with regret and remorse. When Chacha witnessed the love that elephants received at ECCC, he saw his chance to set everything right.pic.twitter.com/6O9hdPKfeM

Hence began a 5-year long journey as Chacha began tending to the Nut Herd, and later our geriatric elephants. He formed a very close bond with our oldest female, Suzy, often reiterating, “Just as I am getting old, so are the elephants. I can understand just what they will need!”

The kindest, gentlest man known at Wildlife SOS, Chacha’s story of retribution, perseverance & dedication is what makes him infinite in our hearts. We, at Wildlife SOS, are glad to have learnt something from Chacha, a message that continues to resonate in our hearts for eternity.

We won’t forget you, Chacha, nor will your elephants. Rest easy, you will be missed.
