NIH grantwriting tip #4: a clearly written grant won’t guarantee funding (and technically isn’t scorable criteria), but a poorly written, sloppily pieced together grant can almost certainly guarantee NOT getting funded. Be kind to your reviewer! (recurring theme for the next few)

NIH grantwriting tip #3: Know and write towards your audience! Find your desired study section’s reviewer roster online. Look up their papers & grants and keep them in mind as you write. NIH pairs grants with reviewer expertise so this will help get yours to the right reviewers.

Congrats to my division chief for being named one of Atlanta's most POWERFUL leaders by ! I WAS going to ask him for more lab space and less clinical duties but now I'm having second thoughts as he might disintegrate me with his laser vision😉

NIH grantwriting tip #2: reviewers are tasked to assess “scientific rigor” by how well “experimental controls, plans to reduce bias (blinding, randomization, inclusion/exclusion criteria, etc), power analyses, & statistical methods” are described, so be thorough in those sections

How sad is it that one of the greatest joys I experience these days is when a meeting gets canceled, allowing me then to get actual work done?😉

Reviewing NIH grants again (3x a year), here’s my NIH grantwriting tip #1: always include Potential Pitfalls/Alternative Approaches for each Aim, then briefly explain how you’ll dig yourself out of each pitfall and why the alternative approach is inferior to the one you proposed.

When I was a kid and was a huge nerd, I spent every second I could listening to Neil Peart and . Now that I’m a physician, scientist, and engineer, and therefore a professional nerd, I spend every second I can listening to Neil Peart and . RIP Neil Peart😢

The survival rates for pediatric cancer increased from 10% to over 80% thanks to NCI-funded multi-institutional, multi-drug clinical trials. With 4 FDA-approved drugs and more on the way, we can now do the same for kids with sickle cell disease! Talking to you, !

We faculty often forget (especially when we just start out) that although taking on new PhD students, postdocs, & fellows requires our time, effort, and funding, our trainees’ investment in us is greater than ours in them. They have more to lose in this relationship than we do!

Also honored to have both Bill Mentzer , who taught me everything I know about hematology (), and my PhD advisor Dan Fletcher at the ceremony. Thanks also to President Bud Peterson for the great intro!

Walked into my office today and was greeted by a giant Sour Patch Kid-shaped box containing 1.3 kg of said Sour Patch Kids. That’s 1170 g of sugar. Apparently my lab bought this for me. I guess they either love me or they’re trying to kill me😉
