Hey #AcademicTwitter - what's your most intense professional cringe moment?
Mine: I was a visiting speaker at Fancy U. Dinner plans had gotten as far as making a reservation and telling me, but apparently no farther. I ended up sitting by myself at a table for 8 for 2 hours.

I am in physical pain for you.

Even "famous" people should state their name before asking questions at conferences.
-
I really like idea of questioners introducing themselves. Philosophy doesn’t have a culture of that yet, so DS wasn’t exempting himself from any norm. His way of dealing with it came across as v kind. But I was a grad student & it was my 1st US conference & I cringed til it hurt.

The almost exactly same thing happened here with a speaker that shall remain nameless and Ian Hacking. On that occasion, he even added in his answer to Ian "I think he is a colleague of yours".
-
Got it wrong. It's even better. He said "I think he USED TO BE a colleague of yours". Hacking was then half-time at the College du France, and the speaker thought he had moved there permanently (which also explains why he failed to connect the dots).

Even famous people shouldn't assume everyone knows what they look like. Sounds like he was trying to be kind about it, though.

I ended up arguing with Searle at a Berkeley job talk about the correct interpretation of the Chinese room argument. Didn't realize who he was until he left the room.
