In 1942, Moaney was drafted into the Army and received an assignment to join Eisenhower, Commanding General of the European Theater, in London. Moaney worked in the kitchen, served as personal valet, and became the unofficial caretaker of Eisenhower’s dogs Telek and Khaki.
Years later, John resumed his valet role when Dwight became president at Columbia University, and Moaney’s wife Delores became Mamie Eisenhower’s maid. When President Eisenhower moved to the White House in 1953, both John and Dolores followed.
One of President Eisenhower’s favorite pastimes was cooking, and he shared his favorite recipes with Moaney. One dish that they frequently prepared was Eisenhower’s vegetable stew.
