  6. Olmstead’s plan emphasized clean views and stately, older trees. He proposed sinking the road traversing the South Lawn so that it was not visible from the State Floor, he cleared away many younger trees, and he established the policy that all new trees be at least 50 years old.

    He created a tree nursery in the southwest corner of the grounds, protected by a post-and-rail fence, depicted in this painting. Once the trees were large enough that they no longer needed protection from the fence, Adams had the trees moved to their permanent locations.

    Adams was a life-long student of horticulture and embraced the opportunity to design and plant a symbolic garden on the White House Grounds. After months of intense study, Adams began planting his trees on July 5, 1826.
