I think twitter's platform is a bigger problem than its users. The platform enforces the censorship, chooses what posts people see and dictates how they are able to interact with them. The toxicity is fostered both by twitter itself and outside forces such as the media.

There are no different opinions clashing on twitter. There is one acceptable opinion for every topic on twitter. Any opposing or in-the-middle opinion stays silent or gets silenced. Twitter's staff, platform and setup encourages this.

I've seen troves of transphobes, racists, homophobes, white supremacists and just generally toxic individuals thrive on this site. JK Rowling is allowed her transphobic spiel, Stone toss is allowed to share his nazi comics under the guise of humour
