    When looking at all the end of year lists you're not on, remember there are other ways to determine your self worth. Are you a good friend? A good ally? What skills will you bring to the table in the apocalypse? Will you be a valuable member of the commune? That's the real stuff.

    Yesterday it was best albums. Today it's the turn of the best books of the year. From sentient mammoth skeletons, to 17th Century devils and from thrillers to Australian Gothic tales, these are the books that caught the eye of our books team this year!

    It's strange to be here in Cornwall as the book I worked on for 5 years is published in the US. I'm waving to it across the Atlantic and wishing it well (for today's purposes that's the US coastline and not St Michael's Mount in the distance)
