If you can’t boot a stock commercial Linux OS using a public ISO with ACPI, then what you have is a paperweight. It makes me angry that vendors expect me to buy a new board as soon as they deprecate their non-standard software.

I still can't believe how crap the firmware is on snapdragon 835/850 laptops - cannot boot a damn thing from USB. And now they are using eUFS storage too so you can't even swap out the HD.
-
AFAIK the Surface X uses an NVMe drive, which while replaceable in principle, no one has done so far (likely because it’s Qualcomm and it needs to contain special firmware partitions
).

I still prefer OpenFirmware to ACPI, because it is easier to implement in a bootloader, so there is a better chance for an independent vendor to build a working implementation. But yes, kernel+dtb is just as bad as kernel+replacement ACPI tables, as we had for several years.
-
Yes, I wish OBP/OFW had “won”. If it had appeared early enough, ARC would have never had a reason to exist, Windows would natively use OFW interfaces everywhere and IBI/EFI would have never come about. We’d be in a better world. Now even Power abandoned it for something worse.

downstream linux kernels are the worst tbh, every arm PC should be able to boot both mainline linux as well as windows on arm just as x86 PC's can boot mainline Linux as well as Windows 10
-
I hope that a standard for arm devices gets developed (seems to be happening with ACPI thankfully) now that they are being used in PC's and downstream linux kernels die off because they're insecure and overall just bad

Simply wrong. A PC is, by definition, an x86 machine. 'Arm PC' is some strange nonsense oxymoron.
-
By the IBM PC compatible definition, no modern x86 machine qualifies. Because they don’t have a CSM anymore, and as such can boot 64-bit OSes only (natively of course). And yeah, what does make a PC a PC? The fact that it runs desktop Windows or the fact that it’s x86?
