Tonight, the moon will turn blood red in a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse begins at 10:09pm, and at 11:59pm, it will be a total lunar eclipse.
We will be open until 11pm, where we will have our telescopes operating to watch the early stages of the eclipse - weather permitting.

On this day in 1972, the Māori Language Petition (Te Petihana) was presented to Parliament with over 30,000 signatures from people around the country. It began a significant shift in the revival of te reo Māori as a language in Aotearoa New Zealand.

In 2004 the society raised $6000 for a life-size bronze statue of his beloved Mrs Chippy to be placed on the grave.
Pictured is Harry McNish's grave in Karori Cemetery, featuring the Mrs Chippy monument.

McNish died, in Wellington in September 1930 and was buried with full naval honours in an unmarked grave. In 1959, the New Zealand Antarctic Society had a headstone erected on his grave. 🧵 4/6

In October 1915, Endurance was crushed and trapped by ice. Shackleton decided that Mrs Chippy and five of the sled dogs on board would not survive. McNish was very attached to Mrs Chippy and never forgave Shackleton for shooting Mrs Chippy. 🧵 3/6

Mrs Chippy was so named because his best friend, the ship’s carpenter and master shipwright Harry McNish, was known as ‘Mr Chippy’. After a month at sea, it was discovered that despite her name, Mrs Chippy was male. 🧵 2/6
