it's still playing out, but this new generation of young athletes setting a new set of boundaries around mental health/what they owe the public and the media//their own agency (in part downstream of them having more power but not only that) feels paradigm shifting

I think the huge difference between Biles and your second point is that if you fuck up a vault you could seriously seriously injure yourself

Agreed. Of course, conservatives are only going after the Black women speaking out. Nothing on, say, Phelps’s opening up on the topic.

I’m not really a sports person but I work in theater which is also a fairly competitive live entertainment industry and I cant help but hope this trickles down to every industry. We all need to take our mental health more seriously.

it's interesting because many of these same dynamics are playing out in media -- with workers speaking more openly about trauma, mental health, their own needs and expectations and pushing back on institutions when the status quo doesn't serve them

i mean, to state the obvious, mental health and physical health are completely + inextricably linked — something everyone who is ~very angry~ is deciding to ignore by saying biles should perform stunts that, if done in the wrong headspace, can be *literally* deadly

She was also being pressured by the same organization that enabled and covered up her own abuse and others’. Remember that’s part of why she came back, to speak out. But past trauma manifests in many ways. We can’t know what she’s going through.

Can't imagine the grit it takes to train your whole life for the Olympics and then stand up to the committee that can disqualify you on a whim. Really inspiring.
