Hey Werner - IMHO, MSFT is gradually evolving into a COSS company which means this a transitionary phase - all the core tech that creates the vast majority of value will be highly permissive and OSS-licensed over time (my belief), eliminating this dynamic completely.

Doubtful. They open things strategically. Don’t expect anything significant in Office, Windows, Windows Server, or SQL Server to be truly open source anytime in the near future.
