280 characters do not suffice to thank everyone who contributed to WE CROSSED A BRIDGE AND IT TREMBLED. But today, with the publication of the paperback, I hope more people come to understand your struggle, admire your courage, and act in solidarity.

Discussions of Syria's war are increasingly detached from the experience of Syrians who live the conflict day-to-day. Our Syria team's first publication aims to ground the discussion, sketching the profound but subtle ways society has changed.

“I used to think of my boy every night as I went to bed, imagining what he was doing ... He was in a grave all that time.” Crushing words from Syrian families receiving news that loved ones, many missing for years, have been killed in Assad prisons.

ISIS attacked my city, and the Assad regime, not surprisingly, stood still watching us die. The brave people of my city defended themselves with kitchen knives. More than 200 beautiful martyrs and around 300 wounded.

So the Assad regime basically updated its prison databases & marked 100s of people dead by torture. Dozens of families are discovering daily that their loved ones died years ago. What a cruel world we live in - when murder is not only openly admitted but openly accepted.
