Students are not adults--they need help with time management, study skills, prioritizing tasks, social skills, character development, etc. Instead of assuming immaturity or irresponsibility, assume they need help.

Justifying harshness or no second chances in the name of preparing kids for the real world: A) Isn't valid. Many employees need coaching on the same things kids do B) Makes no sense to a kid. The real world is happening now C) There are many different versions of the real world

Admin, If teachers can't say what they think to your face, they might say it behind your back. It will be talked about regardless. It shows confidence, not weakness, if teachers feel comfortable enough to be real with you.

The worst part about birthdays and being an educator is that I keep getting older and the students stay the same age.

There are a lot of reasons to involve teachers in the decision-making process, but the best reasons are probably that they will likely have to: 1. Be the ones to implement things. 2. Be the ones to maintain things. 3. Be the ones to field parent questions about things.

What students want now: A teacher that is easy on them and has low expectations. What students will later wish they would have had: A teacher that pushes them and has high expectations.

Yes, students need to adapt to their teacher... BUT...their teacher needs to also adapt to the students. Each year brings new strengths and challenges from students.

Yes, a parent should have instilled X, Y, & Z in their kid. Yes, a parent should be supportive of their kid's education. BUT...it's not the kid's fault. If we want to alter a kid's trajectory, we must do things that are not on our curriculum map.

It's ok to disagree with a teammate. It's NOT ok to: -Be a jerk -Be passive aggressive -Pout -Give the silent treatment -Hold a grudge

High expectations should NOT be: -No mistakes -No second chances -Moving fast High expectations SHOULD be: -Doing challenging things -Doing it until you get it right -Working hard -Asking for help

Many students only do more than they thought they could when they know that their teacher believes in them. When students start to believe this on their own, their entire trajectory expands to put things into reach that were not possible before.

Every question on an assessment should be linked to an experience. Information aquired only through lecture rarely is remembered, and even if it is, it is quickly forgotten after the assessment.

It's not a matter of IF all students can do rigorous and creative tasks--it's a matter of how long it will take and what supports they need. ALL students need high expectations.

Make your assessment before making your unit. When we make an assessment after the learning has happened, we assess what we actually taught, not necessarily what we should have taught.

Dear admin, You can't expect staff to bring their "A" game unless you do too. Dear teachers, You can't expect students to bring their "A" game unless you do too.

No matter your position, it is never ok to make decisions without input, be too important to hear someone's concerns, or to be rude.

As an educator, I can't always settle on "what I know works." What I know works might not work as well as I think it does, it might need refinement, and it might not be as effective as something different. Never think you have it all figured out.
