Alec, your claim that crime is down U.S.-wide is just like @chesaboudin claim it is down in SF.
Technically true. But once you look more closely, it is clear that certain types of crime are up.
In our city, murders are up. Burglaries. Car thefts. Arson. Shootings. Drug OD dead.https://twitter.com/equalityAlec/status/1437420997083373571 …

What do you imagine the significance to be of even modest yearly fluctuations in any of these particular "crimes"? Do you know whether pollution crimes, wage theft, or any other crime not widely investigated is up? What the role of cops and prosecutors are in any of these?

I don't. And neither do you. I'm just thinking progressives make pretty sweeping claims about crime and its causes considering they have no clue. Part of this for sure is a repeat of the 60s. Civil rights movement -> anti-police sentiment -> less policing -> more crime.

i think you should read my long thread, as well as the two major articles i wrote that are cited in the thread. i very rarely make "sweeping claims about crime" because i think the concept of "crime" is pretty much meaningless and a terrible approximation for harm and well-being.

that said, we do know from decades of domestic and international research that inequality, alienation, lack of medical and mental health care, and lack of social connection and creative outlets cause interpersonal violence and conflict.

Sure. I agree. But progressives' criminal justice reforms addressing root causes will take years to work, if they ever do (considering many are experimental). In the meantime, we must guarantee public safety. Without this most basic item of civil society, you have anarchy.
