What is even arguably the point of this @sfchronicle story? That we should assume anyone who tries to steal a cell phone is going to shoot their mother?
This is dangerous, fearmongering journalism in its purest form. It's got it all. 1/https://www.sfchronicle.com/crime/article/Man-accused-of-killing-mother-in-Sacramento-was-15897826.php …

That isn't fact. People who rob are not necessarily dangerous to the public at all. You're trafficking in the same stereotypes as the article.
-
to be fair, robbery by definition requires some use of force, as opposed to burglary. It's reasonable to wonder if a person who robs someone else *could be a danger to the public. But obviously each case is unique.

It totally is. Until it happens to you or someone you love. But for as long as it’s others, you can indulge in the fantasy of being a super virtuous person. There are bad people out there, you know? Protect decent citizens first, then let’s talk criminal justice reform.

I like how the entire article implies that stealing a cell phone on the bus, drug possession, and driving without a valid license are indicators that he was going to *kill his mother*, then mentions at the very end that he was charged with assaulting/injuring his ex wife in 2018

Repeating antisocial behavior is an indicator of future antisocial behavior. Which means such a person is a potential threat to others.
