Birds do it, bees do it—even laboratory mice do it. But with science in the mix, actually creating new life may not always require a male and a female.

Did the scientists give a timeline on when the mice will have legal rights?

If scientists can create offspring without the genetic material from with 2 females, and this is later applicable to humans, does this potentially make the question of gender/sex irrelevant? And how does this redefine what it means to be human? Its very intriguing.

Potential is there to “knock in” (add) the sry gene that determines male sex characteristics in therian mammals.

I'm genuinely surprised that the next generation were not just viable but fertile. How does that work? The whole point is that they've used CRISPR to delete enough genes that a female-derived cell can "fake" being a sperm (i.e. shut off everything that's paternally methylated).

So the next generation of offpring (all female) will inherit (and then pass on) at least some of those deleted genes, and consequently have fertility problems.

I wonder if one of the two human sex chromosomes appeared first in the evolutionary sequence or if they both evolved together simultaneously.
