This is an extremely out of touch decision by
@TeamYouTube. It SHOULD be EASY to know when you’ve found the OFFICIAL YouTube channel of a creator! So why, WHY, why the heck would you make it HARDER for channels to verify themselves? How does this help the viewer? What the heck?https://twitter.com/TeamYouTube/status/1174735005215420416 …Marriland added,

Thanks for the feedback – the change isn’t meant to make it harder to get a badge. The old system only verified >100k subs, but not proof of authenticity. This update improves that. Channels that need clear proof of authenticity/meet the criteria, can still get verification.

If it makes it easier for people <100k subs to get verified, GREAT! Communicate that better! But I've seen creators that have been on YouTube for 10+ years get a letter saying they're losing verification. How much more authenticity can you require of them? This is their home!

By taking away verification (or requiring unrealistic hoops to jump through) from so many creators, you will create an environment where scammers reupload their works using the same or similar names without any indication they're legit. Make it easier to get; don't take it away!

To be fair, there is that Content Match feature that many (maybe all) creators have that identifies fraudulent re-uploads. I was able to get re-uploads of my content taken down pretty easily.

That doesn't protect against the huge losses verified users can be taking losing sponsorship, or companies being scammed by fakes can now risk because previously easy checks for verified channels just became irrelevant while said channels sit in limbo waiting for appeals.

Yeah, loss of sponsors could be a big blow to creators. Do these companies only look to see if a user is verified and not check out subscriber/view counts?

They can but it's much easier when it's quick visual and if info doesn't match up the know who to contact cuz can find that info quickly to inform the actual channel owner of fraudulent use of their name as its up to channel owner to bring up criminal charges if desire

For example an ongoing court case @Barnacules mention in his video about this. In current state he now is unprotected from the same risk again.
